Donington Park September 23rd 2010
I've never been to Donington so I was heart broken when the Ecclestone spawned disaster struck. And very relieved when it reopened so I jumped at the chance to go for a day with No Limits.
Have a reasonable night sleeping in the car park after some discussions and toing and froing with the security guys. Rolled up to the pits in the morning and was delighted to see how good they were. Plenty of plugs for my beand new tyre warmers.
Damp start to the day, but first time there learning my way around so I was in no great hurry. Got five sessions in all (one broken and shortened for rain and two washed out). Was slightly disappointed to lose the last two sessions just when I really felt I was starting to get to grips with parts of the track but had a ball anyway.
Donny is a lovely flowing track with lots of speed and very challenging corners - I spent most of the morning being sucked into early turn in and apexes and running out to the kerbs of part throttle instead of driving out.
Got a very brief stint with an instructor, who pointed out that even in the fourth session I was still turning in too early, and that helped clean things up a lot. We were running very near the front of Inters, which I was chuffed with having never visited the track before. Did mean there was lots of traffic though.
Best time of 1:26.4.
Lovely weather for the drive down:
The view from where I slept:
The view of where I slept:
Shocking how much kit you can take to a track day - half of it was still in the cars.
First view of the Donington pit lane:
Cue the Top Gun theme?
Okay, is it suspension, pressures, or just cooked?

Cheers mate.
I've just discovered a good excuse for my inability to hold a tight line - no compression damping adjustment at all in my shock, from max to min makes no difference. I guess that means it's lost its gas. :(

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
Cheers guys.
I was running wide on exit and not able to open the throttle as early as I wanted to.
For the front view I use a 560TVL bullet cam from www.rfconcepts.co.uk feeding into a good old fashioned camcorder under the pillion seat (where I also keep the mic). It's great quality, even on TV.
For the rear (or side) views I use an MD80 minicam that records straight to microSD card. Got it on ebay for £35. You can get them more cheaply but the cheaper ones are plastic not metal, have push buttons not sliding switches, and tend to be lower picture quality and less reliable. It's surprisingly good quality for the price but it's not waterproof.
I record the speed/time data with RaceChrono, free software that runs on my old N95 hooked to an external bluetooth GPS (the only bit I had to pay for, £40). RaceChrono is fantastic software and does loads of clever stuff even if you're just using it on the phone not producing videos. Another free piece of software, RaceChrono2AVI, converts the data to a small video and I put it all together in Adobe Premiere CS3.

That will do it mate - still to set mine up but not had a chance to get near it yet due to the pending arrival and all the pre-event nonsense
Keeping my RR7 for track, need a trailor and then all set for next year........hope to get to a few sessions next year, I'll try & follow you

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
I found a couple of really slow riders were hard to get cleanly past because their bikes were so damn fast on the straights. Not such a problem at Knockhill and Cadwell but at Donington it was noticeable.

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
I would love to ride Donington again but not sure why they took the Melbourne Loop out as I thought that was another part of a great circuit.
Craner Curves is mad but when you get it right it flows really well all the way up to Coppice where you have to just hold the bike over to clip both apexs.
Shame I am so far away from all circuits except maybe Brands :(

You can't be that far if you're close to Brands - I'm the other side of Glasgow!
Off to Brands at the end of the month for my first day of the year.
I think the Melbourne Loop was still full of holes at that point. Quite a few people I spoke to thought not having the loop was an improvement.

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
You are very keen mate.
You have your own van then?
What van would you suggest to have as a track day van?

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
I am keen, it's bloody addictive! I wish I could afford to do as many days as some of the other guys I know (mind you Sandra would probably divorce me if I did ).
I don't have a van, I have a Trelgo Trailer (similar to this one) which I bought second hand on ebay. It was £200 (and £120 for a tow bar) so it was significantly cheaper than a van although not so convenient.

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
Nice one mate but I don't have a car so can't go down that route and would slightly be concerned that a trailer would not be good if the unfortunate happened.

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
Cadwell is awesome, I'm desperate to get back there this year with my new track bike and see what that has done for my times (it's a faster bike and I'm less worried about pushing my own limits on it).
Transit would be the obvious choice then, purely because of how common they are, but I know nothing about vans. When you say the unfortunate do you mean dropping the bike? Before using the trailer became a problem you'd have to so badly destroy the bike that you wouldn't really care about just lying it on it's side I think.

Re: Donington Park September 23rd 2010
All my mates have vans except 1 who modded a caravan
He took out the back window and cut a door shape, then fitted a roller door and a ramp.
He has all the comforts of a caravan when the bike is not in it.
