When 1st gear selection is made the neutral light should go out as this is triggered by the gearbox selector drum. The neutral light (dimmed) staying on is a clear sign that there is a backend feed reaching the neutral light. If thats the case this backend feed could effect other functions on the bike yet to show itself.

If you are absolutely sure that your connections are good, change the neutral switch (they're only about a tenner). When I fitted an indicator to my 954 my neutral light played up, changed the switch and all was good.
