Step by step guide to cutting down your can
Here is my can as standard, all i have done is just marked where i want to cut it with masking tape, i opted for the foot long 12".
Next i cut through just the outter carbon sleeve
My Johnson can had rivets holding the carbon so after drilling one we decided it would be easier to just grind them off as we were only going to scrap the end part of the can.
After realizing it was impossible to slide the scrap carbon off we thought the best policy was to cut a line through it to remove it
Next was a case of just cutting away all the outter wadding and inner wire wool, once this was done we could start on the inner pipe
Then the next stage was to remove the connecting end by just grinding off 3 small spot welds
Once the end was removed and tided up we cut the inner pipe slightly longer than necessary knowing we can remove any excess later
Next we just marked the holes on the carbon so we could rivet it back together, this was a little bit fiddly as we had to get the holes in exactly the right places...
You need to make sure that when the can is fitted the tail pipe is straight and the logo is in the right place.
Then we just riveted the connecting end back on, fortunately the pre-drilled holes were spot on and we had no problems refitting.
Then we just removed the bit of excess inner exhaust tube with the help of the old faithful Dremel and a mini cutting disc.
Job Done and ready for fitting, i'll charge up the battery later this week and fire it up, i'm just praying it's not too loud.
Just wanna say a big thanks to "RinTinTin" for his help and use of his workshop, a beer and burger on the slate for ya mate.

Thanks for this Thread Wild Bill,
I was wondering what I would find if I chopped my can down.
Now I know.

Re: Step by step guide to cutting down your can
Cheers lads, i also had no idea how to do it, it was a kind of trial and error scenario but luckily everything seemed quite straight forward. I did take about 30 pics to do a real step by step guide but i just posted the important (main) pics.
@RINTINTIN... I don't care how loud it is mate, it's goin on and that's that! Thanks again for your help and use of the workshop, made a potentially tricky job fairly straight forward.

Don't know if this'll work mate, it's a direct link to my photobucket, bear in mind the pictures will be in reverse order so start from the bottom and work your way up... Good luck.

Re: Step by step guide to cutting down your can
Wild Bill, I was wanting to mod my can but wasn't to sure how to approch it, After reading thru your thead It gave me the inspiration to carry the work out myself.
Here is the link to the post where I documented the mod.

Pleased it has helped mr pie, i should think most pipes are similar in design, you may find yours could be easier, a mate has a alloy Vance & Hines pipe on his R1 and he done his in under an hour, that's what gave me the inspiration to tackle mine.
PS. The link to your post won't work, it says "You do not have permission to access this page."

Re: Step by step guide to cutting down your can
Hovis, I know ppl do say that but after riding the bike for an hour I haven't noticed any difference, just a bit louder! To be honest can we use all that power on the roads of today?
The can was a cheap buy from fleebay, if I don't like the mod or performance I will change it, its all about trying different things.
thanks for the comment.

Re: Step by step guide to cutting down your can
What a transformation Mr Pie, the cut down can looks much better and certainly makes the bike look a whole lot better. I can't wait to see what mine looks and sounds like, i've still not fitted it!
