Now then

Went on the annual Wirral Egg Run with some Mates from the XJR club.

Sat 31st March
Last day of March in 2012 and Lesley and I filled the tank bag for one night away and set off after I finished work to Ellesmere Port. We were heading to the Wirrall Egg Run to take place the following day, Sunday 1st April. We arrived at our hotel on Sutton Road at 4pm, booked in and walked (well, I hobbled) less than a mile down the road to Andyfads Ye Olde Red Lion pub. Garfield (Gary/Zig Zag) was already there and Andy and Jackie came back from shopping shortly after that. We had a couple of pints then went a short drive down the road to meet Dieffe, Jo, CC and Julie for an evening meal. The food was very nice and the company was better. Jo looked extremely well and was bubbling all night which was lovely to see and Martin (CC) was as jokey as ever. Dave (Dieffe) was on form too, as the miserable old git he plays so well.I was falling asleep at the end of the meal so Lesley and I went back to our room at the hotel and everyone else went back to Andy and Jackie’s pub for a night cap. It was a late one for Andy and Jackie, no change there then having a busy pub but they were still up at the ‘crack of dawn’ to sort the free bacon sarnies, tea and coffee at their pub for anyone going on the Egg Run, a donation is all that was required.

Sun 1st April
There was a frost on the bike seat at 8am the next morning but the sun was up and shining bright and by 08:30 the frost had gone and the warmth of the sun had all but dried the wet stuff left. A quick wipe with a serviette after an eat all you can breakfast Mmmmmmm then it was over the road to fill the bike up and down the road to Andy’s pub. Some bikes were already there, it being a meeting point for the Egg Run, including Andy and Gary obviously, Ste (straight from night shift, he’d been awake 26 hours at this point), Largest of Als and Dieffe in his car.

We talked bikes and bollox, as you do until we all set off for the main meet at New Brighton in Ellesmere Port. Gary was offered a female pillion for the day, a lovely blonde lass called Sam and he jumped at the chance, well, wouldn’t we all being free and single. Andy led us away and there was every kind of bike and scooter going the same way and the look on some car drivers faces when they saw bike, after bike, after bike, who didn’t know what was going on, was a picture.
According to reports today, there was around 12,000 bikes on the run, so I reckon there must’ve been about 4,000 when we got to the meeting point. I got talking to a local and apparently where we all were stood, they used to race motorbikes around in the day, spot on. Everyone was in a party like mood in the glorious sunshine, people were collecting donations in buckets and lots were in fancy dress. Mostly rabbits but there were chick’s and alsorts and Gary got his own superhero. His face when she got undressed in front of him to reveal her Superwoman outfit was a classic. He’s still grinning now I reckon.

A bike started up in the distance and slowly, the noise got louder and louder until the ground was shaking and ear drums were almost bleeding as all those with loud pipes began to bounce off each other and make sweet music with their throttle hand, it made me grin, as it always does. Lots of people had gathered to look at the bikes, riders and pillions and to wave us all off as we went on our way. The Run started and it was a very steady start as is normal until the front lot get going and everybody settles down to find there comfortable position in the cavalcade. The route took us through shopping streets and along residential roads and the crowds were phenomenal. Men, women, children, all shapes and sizes, cheering and clapping us all as we rode past and some wanting high fives too. Some people were sat out on deck chairs, at the side of the road and the end of their drives, some were having picnics and some in pub car parks on the booze but all had made the effort to turn out and support the bikers Egg Run, a great feeling. We maneuvered alongside Gary and Sam to check his smile, yep, still like the Cheddar Gorge.

We arrived at Clatterbridge Childrens Hospital at about 12:20 so it had taken about an hour or so to cover 20 miles. That would normally ‘do my head in’ but not on an occasion like this, every steady mile was a pleasure. The sun was still glowing as bike after bike rolled in to the hospital. There was a couple of burger vans, ice cream vans, a doughnut van, plenty of portaloo’s, a must and there was a café on site which was serving hot and cold food if you could be bothered to cue and free, yes free, tea and coffee, magic. Andy shot off back to the pub to help Jackie get set up and sorted for the rest of their busy day while Gary, what was he doing, oh yeah, stuck to Sam like glue as She carried on collecting money in her bucket around the hospital car park. He was a happy bunny.

After a walk round the car park looking at all the bikes and taking a photo or two

Lesley and I rode back to Andy’s pub where there was to be entertainment in the form of bands from 2pm till late, about 6 or 7 bands I think and a hog roast outside the pub too. There was a beauty GSXR 1000 came back to the pub, streetfightered with a very special one off paint job, a tubular swingarm and wheels imported from America

Dave, Martin and Julie arrived and we got introduced to a relation of Andy and Jackies who’d been on the Egg Run on a Bandit 600, a lovely couple enjoying the sun and day as we all were. We also met GaryP and another guy who’s name escapes me and just before we left I met Zarniwoop. It got to 3pm and we decided to make tracks. We had a good run back apart from the bloody 50 mph road works that must last for 25 miles on the M62, boring as hell. We did, or rather, I did, get drawn alongside by a BMW X5 copper. I’d come off the M62 onto the M60 Manchester ringroad and give it large through the traffic, across the three lanes, in total safety obviously. He must’ve been travelling up to the junction cause once I’d got past all the traffic I could see something comin fairly rapid so eased off to 80mph and pulled into the middle lane and kept it steady. Lesley started to tell me he was alongside so I had a look at him through my black visor and he motioned me to take it easy and slow it a bit, I nodded and he went on his way, sensible policing by a top man. To end the day, I pulled into a garage to fill with petrol when we got back to Thirsk, I put 20.14 litres in so timed it to perfection. When we got home Lesley had lost about £60 she thought. After tea she had a ride back to the garage and low and behold she'd dropped the cash when paying for the petrol and someone had handed it back in, result.
What a great day, thousands of pounds must’ve been raised on the day and all for a good cause, gives you a warm feeling inside.

Lookin forward to next year already.

Cheers

Cracking read that, good pics too. Saw a few in Southport Sunday afterrnoon with Egg run t-shirts on. Must be great for those stuck in hospital to know people have taken time to donate eggs and bring a few smiles Easter morning.

I've only ever done the run once, back in 1995. Being from Liverpool I really should of done ore, but its either been a case of no bike, I've missed it or have already got commitments. Next year I'll make sure I do it.

Brilliant write up JT. Brought a smile to my ugly mush when you talked about Gary. Just shows there's decent people out there, in more ways than 1. Your mrs getting her dosh back & a decent polis as well as all those people giving up their time & money for a good cause. Well done mate. Wirral Egg Run April 1st 2012 964788

Now then Mique

People often ask me that. Answer is, I don't know, I remember the slightest thing on a ride out and I can recall it pretty good. I think it's the concentration level, it takes over and log's everything thumbup
