project RRW Empty project RRW

Post by jmacdwlr Mon 26 Aug 2013, 10:04

Good morning all finally got started on my project and already a lot of hiccups but its coming together. I will add piccies as soon as photobucket finishes uploading and I can sort through. I decided when I had finished my last standard build after seeing some of the lovely customs on here that I would give it a go. So started gathering parts a couple of months ago scouring ebay till I had what I thought would be a good start so got as far as this:
project RRW IMG_0923

I had purchased a VFR750 swing arm as I know its common now but I still love the look but on talking with lambchops he talked me into the 800 swingarm as it was a better match on the blades. Doing a bit of research I fell in love with the new CB1000 swingarm and wheel however they were virtually the cost of another bike so settled for the VFR800. Took the swingarm to a lot of friendly local engineers but they were unable to do the boring out part finally found a guy a bit further afield who removed the 25mm and could also bore it out.
project RRW IMG_1441

That done I looked at rear ends I like and I know its been done a million times probably but I do like the 2006 R1 rear unit so purchased one of these and went about working out how it could be integrated. Firstly the composite of the swingarm put me off attempting to alter as being cast its anightmare to work with so went straight with the easy answer and built some C brackets for it out of 10mm aluminium (yes I know overkill). Well somehow measured these up wrong and what I thought would be a great seat angle in the pics turned out dreadful so scrapped those ones and started again this time much happier with the job.
project RRW IMG_1331

I then tried out my RRY front end which dropped in beautifully and with no problems, I considered the route that lambchops had taken with powder coating and anodizing and being honest for a "not bad" front end I just couldnt justify the money (as megawatt will tell you I am as tight with cash as it gets :-)). Took the calipers apart cleaned greased new brembo road pads and left the front end for a while as there didnt seem to be any headaches there.
project RRW IMG_1334

Next hurdle was trying to put the tank on and because of the new position of the subframe its a much different position on the rear tab for the tank so after a lot of banging head off wall and umming and arring decided to put two problems into one. The battery box would also not fit in its original position so designed a new battery box out of steel and also incorporated a new tab to mount the tank onto. This shockingly worked very well straight out the box (saying which I have still not finished assembly so I hope that stays true).

Next was the brakeline for the rear swingarm having looked I agree they are much nicer inside the swingarm so asked around and a lot of people came back rating Venhill so rang up they were most helpful and went through all the bits I would need stainless or chrome well stainless is better so have that one and throw in some spare bolts and banjos etc. Now those of you that have done this will be laughing already I didnt even think on it as I stated above I am a tightwad with cash but a brake line wasnt going to be much was it so I didnt even ask £140 later I had a very pretty but madly expensive delivery
project RRW IMG_1480
topped this with a nice wavey disc and we are away

Next was the shock which I asked many people on here and searched ebay but weighing up the costs of buying one off ebay and having it all redone for my weight I went with the consensus of a new Nitron 3 way road shock with black spring off a company called FTR who I was dealing with anyway as rebuilding partners streetfighter with any spare time I get.
project RRW IMG_1541

Next came the powdercoating part had my mind set on a nice deep candy red since the start of the project. Went into Bournes in birmingham was informed that they were out of candy red would be a week till it came in and they showed me a new purple very similar to cadburys but with a nice fleck to it and being an impatient numpty I was sold. the finish was lovely and very quick turn around and came out looking like below. Everyone loved it except me I am very OCD and once I set my mind to something I am a stubborn swine all I can see in it is that its not candy red :-). Still its not bad and at this point I came accross the CB1000 swingarm, shock, caliper, wheel that I wanted so have put that one into storage.
project RRW IMG_1473
project RRW IMG_1577

Getting frustrated with missing out on the very rarely seen sunny weekends we were having I brought a "nice simple" streetfighter off ebay. Had been rebuilt from a Cat C and ran well at low revs but got lumpy on higher range. Me being cocky and having done a few of these assumed that it would be that the carbs had not been altered so grabbed it up for £700 with a view to tweaking using for a couple of months and selling on for £700. Tatty but didnt care at least it got me on the road, I then phoned megawatt to get his opinion and he terrified me with a list of things that could actually be wrong so lifted the tank to play with carbs and it all went wrong needless to say three weekends later and a few hundred extra down and they became this.
project RRW IMG_1475

Back to the project at hand while working on the streetfighter I had decided that life wasnt difficult enough with the project (sarcasm in case anyone is wondering :-)) and brought myself a lovely custom underseat exhaust set and custom carbon undertray that actually sits inside the fairing for an R1. This was one of those late night pretty drunk "Oh wow I have to have that" purchases so went and picked them up and love the exhausts but creates another ball ache so mocked them up and the "love the look" but "man its gonna be a nightmare" kind of balanced each other out so I was happy.
project RRW IMG_1562

Now I know you will all think I am a sucker for punishment at this point all I can say is I agree, because after riding the streetfighter I realised how much comfortable the upright bars would be and as I am doing Spain in a couple of weeks hopefully on this bike I scoured ebay for a set of ABM streetfighter yokes. Also decided that if going the whole hog that I should replace the front fairing as well for something a little different and again with those blurry half drunk eyes brought myself a 2006 GSXR600 front fairing which with those eyes looked "verrrrrry close hardly any modding needed" yes I know I really should stop drinking lol. Well ferreted out an old set of renthal bars in gold (which I liked with the purple) got a complete rolling chassis finally.
project RRW IMG_1617

Found myself another little project for after an old FJ750 seca with loads of spares for £100
project RRW IMG_1468

At this point the engine I had stashed in the garage which has 30K on it but was guarenteed to be a lovely runner by the nice policeman I brought it off was replaced with a 7K engine that I just couldnt resist off ebay also in with the deal which I still think was a steal was a set of RSV millie forks Brembo Calipers and Billet top and bottom yoke.
project RRW IMG_1527

At this point I decide that this will be a temp project while I get the stem pressed out of the RSV forks and an RRW stem (if anyone has one I am still looking) bushed and placed back in and another frame which came with the engine altered to take the CB1000 swing arm. I brought myself another 2006 R1 arse end as the work had already been done on this and made a duplicate set of brackets ready for winter project anyway again off topic. Bits got a little out of hand now when i laid them out.
project RRW IMG_1526
project RRW IMG_1532

Next was to sort the exhausts I contacted/stalked once again Mr Megawatt who helped me out with a set of stainless downpipes. I then rang dozens of companies and visited them all over the place but finally found an amazing couple of guys in a company called metal melarky whose work and friendliness blew me away straight away. Left it with them for a week and also tasked them with building a bracket for the rear light as R1 rear lights attach as part of the undertray and as some genius had the idea to put a carbon one on there the bracket was not included. Well when the pics come up I am sure that you can all see why I was no impressed with there work and gave me a bit more enthusiasm to get back into it they sent me pictures at every step and designed on a tight time schedule a beautiful one off system.
project RRW IMG_1632
project RRW IMG_1663

Added myself a nice new toy as well the nautilus horn
project RRW IMG_1718
realised it hit the mudguard with the slightest bump DOH so remounted
project RRW IMG_1719

Next was another kicker realised my nice harris fairing bracket was no use whatsoever with renthal bars which is anightmare as deadline is coming up very quickly
project RRW IMG_1722

Built a new rectifier mounting out of HT aluminium so at least thats one bit out the way
project RRW IMG_1653

Also realised with new bars they hit the tank so put myself some high quality adjustable steering stops :-)
project RRW IMG_1649

Nice set of Koso clocks tried mounting straight off the bars but couldnt get enough clearance on the ignition so ended up mounting like so
project RRW IMG_1630
project RRW IMG_1648

got myself some nice adjustable rearsets as well which I fitted yesterday quite happy with them
project RRW IMG_1616

Started the fairing as well which is a nightmare but its getting there

Looking good mate, reminds me of 'project whenever' a few months ago:lol: .  I've done the same rectifier mount you've done only i used copper not ally like you, but so far it's holding up well. Interesting watching your front end progress, am thinking about a usd front end on mine at some point.

project RRW Empty update

Post by jmacdwlr Tue 01 Oct 2013, 09:45

right sorry guys was a bit balls to the wall with trying to finish her off for the trip I did however kind of manage it for 1am when we set off at 6am certainly gave it a good 2600 mile test ride though :-) heres a couple of pics of semi finished project:
project RRW <a href=project RRW IMG_1785" />

project RRW <a href=project RRW IMG_1787" />

project RRW <a href=project RRW IMG_1839" />

it was certainly a challenge riding an untested bike and I thought I would be doomed when half way to portsmouth i went to change down a gear and found the gear peg was not a solid unit like usual with the lever and had vibrated off. Had a few issues with her on the way but to be expected really unfortunately doesnt any longer look quite as sweet as the pic as on the way down from the mountain road you see in pics I slid her over the edge. However hardly any damage to me and a testament to hondas building caught up with a local rock climber who tied one of his ropes to his tow bar and the other to my forks dragged her back up the face 10 minutes of fettling and we were off again even if not quite so pretty and finished off the rest of the journey like a trojan it did.
