when you say; up your way!!!! you mean some where in Scotland.

Thought I read you were looking around Glasgow/Borders region 'Glasgow is a good 2hrs away from Aberdeen with lots of speed cameras in between' No

It can take 5hrs from Aberdeen to Newcastle, so to meet up with you guys down south from Aberdeen 'or visa versa' is a real pain in the A55

HOWEVER, if my rota continues as is; I'm home September cheers

Doubt I'll make it JT. Thats my birthday & have to have an op on left knee 24th April, so probably won't be able to ride anyway. I know Tom has put this up on the Tuono forum and there are a few takers there.

Enjoy

Now then

Fri 3rd May
Bob (Bob600) and Gary (Zigzag) were the first to arrive around 19:30. They’d had a good, clear, dry ride up and were in good spirits. After a coffe Gary went to book in at the Linden Tree B&B, showered, then came back down for tea. We had Homemade Steak pie, Peas and boiled tatties at ours and chilled out before our friends, Gavin and Georgia landed about 22:30 from Peacehaven. Georgia doesn’t go on the bike, good job cause there’s no pillion seat on his chopped Triumph, so Gavin had brought his Street Triple in the van. We did some catching up on life and talked excitedly about the weekend before Gary walked up to his B&B at the top of the street and we all ‘hit the sack’.

Sat 4th
I was up first as per normal and it wasn’t long before everyone else was up and about and we’d all had breakfast. Lesley and Georgia would go for a look around the shops in Northallerton and us lads decided to have a drive up to The Manor Cafe at Bellerby, Leyburn. It was a glorious morning as we piled into the Mini, I had to open the sunroof so Gavin could sit up straight in the front, he’s a GIANT. We drove via Masham and Middleham, great biking roads that suit the Mini too. Bless her, she was carrying 60 stone that day, of pure beef, well, with a bit of fat round the edge lol but that’s the tasty bit ha ha and she went well. I’ve fitted a 15% reduced Supercharger pulley and some Titanium plugs and boy do they make a difference, she flies. It was an entertaining journey, oh how Bob and Gary laughed in the back as we swept along the dry stone walled roads that resemble a rollercoaster in the beautiful N.Yorks landscape. It was quiet at the cafe but Simon and Billy were very busy in AMR (Auto Moto Racing). They had bikes in for tyres and MOT’s galore. We had a little shower of rain but it didn’t even wet the ground and more bikes started to arrive, some for AMR and the majority for the cafe. We had a chat with Simon and Billy as they worked on the bikes and Simon kindly let me take the lads into the Dyno Bay where there was a very trick S1000RR which had had a lot of money spent on it. It was dripping with Carbon Fibre and looked the business. Simons KTM had the front end out and was under cover and there was a very tidy, original 916 with an SP seat unit in there too. He also had an old TY50 trials bike for sale, that took us back to our child hood days.

We said our goodbyes and Simon wished us luck for my ride out tomorrow and we went back via Richmond and Northallerton. The return journey was even better now I had my ‘eye in’. The whoops of joy from the back as the Cooper S ‘gripped the road like glue’ spurred me on and we were home in no time. I thought I heard “Never again” as we got out at home but I’m sure it must’ve been “Can we go again” lol.

We watched the qualifying for the MotoGP and I made a sarnie for our lunch before the girls arrived back.

Al (Wee Al) and Hazel arrived next, around 14:00 from Irvine in Scotland. They’d also had a good drive. Al sold his bike this year but still they came, for ‘the craic’. My Mate Scottie was having a BBQ and we went up to say hello and have a couple of beers since it was nice and dry, if a little cool. I asked him to show our guests the Ferrari which he did and started her up and after warming rev’d her up, what an awesome sound I will never tire of hearing. Out into the back garden and everyone was relaxed

a few others Scottie had invited started turning up and we drank, nibbled and chatted. It was a lovely afternoon in the sun, although Georgia is a Greek Cypriot and so is used to much warmer weather than we can offer ‘oop north’ and she was cool at best. Scottie did offer her a ‘duvet’ but she declined lol. The bbq was sparked up and we had some hot dogs and salad, as you do but didn’t go over board because we were having food later. Ste txt me to say what time he and Dee would be with us and so we thanked Scottie and Lisa for the afternoon and headed home about 7-ish.

I did the obligatory Blade rev up, as you do full of drink before Lesley stole the key’s, as usual lol. Ste & Dee were booked into the ‘Vale of York’ pub at the top of our street and walked up with Gary as we all retired to our pits, ready for the big day ahead.

Sun 6th
Rideout day. I was up with the larks as usual and had my breakfast before anyone else came down stairs. One by one they appeared and coffee/tea and breakfast was had by all. It was a decent bright, mild morning as I got the bikes out of the garage.

When I started my XJR I noticed it was a little ‘rattly’ at the front, it sometimes is but this seemed louder than before. I tapped the downpipes connection to the engine and discovered that the flange on pipe 2 was loose at the bottom. Now the last time this happened I tightened up said bolt and the bastard snapped off leaving the stud inside the head, so no way was I tightening this baby up today, just before my ride out. I left as is. Me, Gavin and Bob shot down to tescos to fill up, Gary was already at the pub and then back to the pub we rode to meet the rest. Slowly but surely everyone arrived, my nephew Shaun being the last, after being stopped by a ‘Copper’ for a check over and we got set off around 10:15.

My Mate Tom from Thirsk, who rides a Tuono very well, had put the word about for my ride out and 5 people, including a Speed Triple riding young woman, he knew turned up, which meant there was 14 of us in total. A quick instruction on the ‘second man drop off’ system we use to those that didn’t know and as the sun was showing it’s face, we rode out of the village and up to ‘Busby Stoop’ roundabout then hung a left riding the 2 mile straight past Alanbrookes Army camp to Topcliffe. One junction on the A168 dual carriageway and then off at Dishforth, over the A168 and under the A1 bringing us onto a nice little unnamed back road through Sharow to Ripon. It’s a little bumpy but got the juices flowing as TonyD was behind me now. Around the A61 Ripon By-pass and it’s 5 roundabouts, we followed the A61 towards Harrogate. Traffic wasn’t too bad and it is the major route from Ripon to Harrogate so we couldn’t moan but things got a lot quieter as we turned onto the B6165 at Ripley and headed for Pateley Bridge. Another Mate from Thirsk, Dave, who has a Bandit 1200 but was on his 350LC today, kept with me as we kept a decent pace along this road. There was a few dodgy tarmac sections and a couple of bloody craters that some said they hit but overall it was good to get cracking along a proper road with minimal traffic. 4 or 5 of us got away from the rest a little so we stopped in Risplith to get the group together again before moving on and dropping down into Pateley. The weather turned a bit here as we climbed the steep hill out of Pateley. It started to spit a little, not too much and not enough to slow the pace but you could see it on your visor, which made you a bit more aware of your position on the road and made you accurate through the bends with no hamfisted throttle openings. We caught a lad on a Triumph, I think it was a Trophy, who had full hard luggage but no passenger, he must’ve been on a long trip and we breezed past and on our way. I was ready for a pee and we’d got a gap again so I pulled into a large car park in Grassington and we had a break there. We met a couple on a XJR in the car park, I forget their names but they are new members on here and were going away ‘oop north’ for a few days and had called in on chance so it was good to meet them.

Everyone was enjoying themselves so far and we set off again, turning right out of Grassington onto the brilliant B6160 to Aysgarth, near enough. Unfortunately, the rain decided to join us on our ride. Luckily, we had missed the worst, as we discovered the road in front of us was swimming with water in parts. We carried on and eventually, through Kettlewell, the road dried up and we could relax on the bikes and push on. The sun made the odd appearance and things were good. We stopped at the junction with the A684, probably one of the best roads in the Dales and the main route between Northallerton and Kendal, all 62 miles of it and waited till everyone was there before setting off for Hawes. There was only a small amount of traffic on this main route, which was nice, and much fun was had blasting along between the drystone walls and hedgerows, close to the road, you get a real sensation of speed with your senses at their most alert and your peripheral vision full, no room for error.

As we left Bainbridge, I was aware of a headlight coming up fast in my mirrors, ‘Who the bloody hell is this I thought’ and upped the pace down the hill and round the left. I passed a car but then the bike coming behind shot past me as we rode the long drag uphill. It was a ‘Lucky Strike’ painted Gixxer thou., what I saw of it and he was on it. We ‘batted’ on and mingled among a gaggle of MG soft top, sportcars as we arrived in Hawes. As we parked up here, there and where we could, we decided to go for lunch to ‘The Pantry’ in the middle of the town. Bob had brought his overnight bags with him so he could head off home when he fancied and it was in Hawes that he told me he was getting off home. He’d enjoyed the weekend and he wolfed down fish ‘n’ chips and then set off south. I was sad to see him go at that point but glad he’d enjoyed the weekend. The Pantry is a great cafe above the Spar shop and has a never ending menu of homemade food, almost everything you would ever want and at very reasonable prices, for decent portions.

JT's N. Yorks ride out May 5th 2013 P1030473_zps35b2ee93

Fed and watered I decided to alter the route because the black clouds over Buttertubs direction looked evil. I took us back along the A684, another excuse to ride this great road is always easy to find and through Aysgarth onto Leyburn. It is a fantastic road and we just rode one of the best sections twice.
My Mate Gavin on his modified Street Triple had a soaking wet arse because he has no rear mudguard. He’d been struggling with is back too and so decided to go back to ours from Leyburn. Not like him to miss a full day’s ‘hoon’ so he must’ve been struggling. That left 12 of us to ride the B6108 through Bellerby and into Richmond. This is another classic stretch of Yorkshire Dales road and we made good use of no traffic and swept into the town. The sun was making more regular appearances now and it wasn’t just the tyres and the road that was warming up but the pace was too. Out of Richmond, through Brompton On Swale and onto the elegant B6271 to Northallerton. This road is a gem and especially a series of 10 bends leading into Great Langton. The land is flat but the bends blend perfectly into each other and there are no blind bends or junctions just a couple of them that tighten up half way round and demand real respect because of the speed you enter them. It’s infamous around here and a bikers favourite. After that adrenalin filled few miles we stopped for a fag break and to allow the group to become one once again. We then filled up half a mile down the road.

It was here I checked the exhaust header pipe again and the bloody stud had snapped off, leaving the remaining bit of stud in the head, not poking out, no, recessed in the head, magic. We headed North from the garage on the A167 to Great Smeaton. Turning right, I took us on a magic unnamed back road through a couple of villages, over the A19, through Hutton Rudby and skirting Stokesley onto the Helmsley TT road, the B1257. Much has been wrote about this road and I would say probably all of it is true. It has everything for a biker. It goes from the sublime to the ridiculous in no time at all and you have to be ‘on the ball’ at all times. You go from very fast, open corners, with walls and hedges well back off the road side, to very tight, ‘nadgery, almost clostrophobic bends covered with a canopy of trees, it’s MEGA. As we sped along I noticed a bloody big lamb on the side of the road. I think because I had my original cans on the bike it didn’t really hear me till I was almost on top of it, this was a good thing because I shot past before it had chance to decide what to do, which would invariably been to run into the road in front of me. Thankfully it didn’t get the chance but apparently it did then move into the road as the next group arrived, clipping the front wheel of Mike on his Repsol Blade but thankfully not causing an accident. We all gathered in the Market Place and stories were swapped as we reflected on a cracking day of riding.

Some went their separate ways from the group at this point, it was 16:30 and time to head home. I led the rest of us out of Helmsley, up ‘Waterloo’, down the 1 in 4 Sutton Bank and back to Thirsk. Me, Ste and Dee, Ryan and Shaun stopped at the Vale, our starting point earlier today and had a couple of pints and talked over the day. It was Shauns first group ride and he had really enjoyed it. He rode steady and safe and got home in one piece. Nothing more could be asked of a lad who only passed his test last year. Ste was brilliant as always in his now customary position of ‘Tail Gunner’. It takes a man with a lot of patience to sit at the back and sweep everyone up and it is a pivotal position and key role in the ‘second man’ drop off system. A huge thank you to Ste for leading from behind, cheers Mate. Yamy66 and his Mrs had been sat listening to our conversation working out who was who then came over and introduced themselves when they were confident they knew who we were. Shame they couldn't get to the ride out but there's always next time.
Shaun set off home to Sunderland from the pub, he was heading back to 2 Para the next day and wanted to spend some time with his family.

I went home and Ste, Dee and Ryan followed down to have some tea with us. Gavin and Georgia had set off home, I don’t blame them, they had a seven hour drive back to Peacehaven infront of them and Georgia had some work to do the next day. Lesley had prepared jacket spuds with Bolognese and garlic bread for us and we ate it while watching the taped MotoGP. That was after I’d tried to get the videos of the day onto our telly, through the computer, I was swapping cables from the tv, dvd player and sky but could not get the bugger to come on the screen. After Ryan frightened me to death by stepping on a tray, I tought the telly had blew it was so loud, we calmed down and watched the race. Then it was into the shower and up the pub.
There was a good crowd of us and we owned the pool room again before ending up in the bar, singing on karaoke and dancing the night away.

We left the pub and said our goodnights around 02:30, home and into bed for 03:00, pished.
The next day things were a lot quieter funnily enough. Everyone was gone by late morning and we chilled. It was another XJR meet success and I’d like to thank everyone who turned up, those in the club and those that are not, you all made it worthwhile the effort of organising it and here’s to the next one.

Cheers
John and Lesley

great write up as usual mate, sounds like a good time was had by all. Remember doing some of those roads and places a few years back, on the 'coast to coast' blast. We left Morecombe sat morning, crossed over the moors etc & ended up in Robin Hoods Bay, can recommend it if you fancy a good day out
