Rhubarb n Custard - FINISHED Empty Rhubarb n Custard - FINISHED

Post by Jester7 Sat 15 Jun 2013, 14:48

Finally the bike I bought a month ago has gone through a mini-refurb and is now finished. Read about early days work here: http://www.firebladeriders.org/t10292-hi-all-newb

Pics first, waffle after Smile

A quick recap on the state of the bike when I bought it: bike was straight with no damage, nothing hanging off, paperwork was in order and everything worked including the alarm. Paperwork included the install cert for that, loads of old MOT\service docs, service record up to about 20k miles (bikes now on 27k) but a few receipts for stuff done in meantime including a camchain tensioner and headstock bearing refresh.

The bad news was the bike had sat for 3 years mostly unused so the fuelling was off, it kept dropping a cylinder or 2, both tyres pretty much worn out and like plastic, shock was a bit bouncy, r/h fork leaking which had also contaminated the brake pads, original rubber brake lines. The temp gauge wasn't working along with the horn and sidelight. There was also a bit of a whiff of fuel in crankcases so carbs and\or fuel tap knackered.

So a full service has been done, new oil\filter, air filter, plugs, brake fluid, front pads changed. Fork seals were changed for new with new fluid. All other items checked for play, adjusted or lubed as applicable. Braided brake lines have been fitted all round. A pair of new tyres also slapped on. Where applicable Honda parts have been used.

The dropping on to 2 cylinders, 2&3, was as I suspected a dodgy ignition coil - replaced for 2nd hand and new fires on all 4.

Having tested the temp gauge by grounding out the wiring to earth, I reckoned the sender was faulty. Replaced that with no luck, turns out the thermostat was stuck open so that was changed with a new housing gasket of course.

A fuel tap repair kit sorted the slow drip leak.

The carbs were dropped off at a local dealer to be cleaned, though they needed to be sent away for ultrasonic cleaning (I though they were doing it so an expected 1 week turnaround changed to 2.5 weeks). A number of seals were renewed as well as the needles for new as the original were slightly worn.
Upon putting the carbs back on the bike with the tank on and engine running fuel starting pissing out of the t-unions for the fuel hoses, I suspect the ultrasonic clean finally did for old seals. I've replaced those myself and no leaking now Smile

The in-tank fuel filter looked ok, though I've gathered the opinion they're not great so have fitted an SC28 inline filter and new hoses.

As well as new front brake pads I've cleaned up the pistons and generally serviced the calipers, thankfully the seals etc are all good and the brakes have scrubbed up well and work great.

I've got rid of the awful purple screen as you can see in the last pic, put some new Honda grips on and replaced the slightly worn rubber-topped pegs with some alloy ones.

Last thing to be done was a carb sync, the bike was popping and banging like a goodun which worried me until I realised I'd forgotten to plug the TPS back in!

Everything else with it has been fixed or cleaned up as appropriate. As the rest of the bike has had a thorough going over I started to eye up the original shock which looked a little tired, I also saw a little oil mist on it so suspect that's why the damping isn't great. I've replaced it for a brand new Hagon. Someone asked me why not spend a little more and get a Nitron, I won't out-ride the Hagon, the companies customer service is equally good, they also do a rebuild service and I like how it looks close to OEM whilst being at least as good.. The fact it's cheaper got it the nod. To protect this investment I've fitted a hugger.

I've gone to the degree of replacing the number plate as the original looked a little tatty and had bolt holes in the wrong places. No details spared!

There's probably a load of stuff I've forgotten but it all now works well, looks good, and it rides superbly so I'm happy. What was supposed to be a cheap fixit and use bike and turned into a mini-refurb project but I've managed to keep the spend mostly under control.
I'd be happy to hear what you lot think of Rhubarb, named by the missus due to the colour scheme! Laughing

Thanks for the kind words all. First time riding it to work today, commuting is always a good test as doing the same roads every day means you know exactly how a bike rides the dips\bumps etc due to familiarity of the route. Thankfully no chassis issues have cropped up, and the suspension action is completely unmemorable which usually means it's doing its job Laughing

Just the odd rusty hose clip to replace now, tiny details really.
